There he was, the crunchy little bastard, laying on my bedsheet as I whipped the covers back. Something tickley was touching my leg as I awoke from slumber this morning. “What has gotten into my house now?”
It was a Japanese beetle. About a half inch, roundish, greenish, brownish. Slow in walking, fast in flying. And how the hell did it get in my bedsheets?
Ah, now I remembered. A couple days previous I had done a couple loads of laundry, including all my bedding. On beautiful summer days it’s lovely to hang clothing and sheets to dry out in the sun and wind. So out onto the line everything went.
It’s also currently the height of Japanese beetle season around here (and many other places, too). It seems there’s nothing they won’t try and eat, leaving their lacey munchings on all kinds of plants. And with their population being so numerous right now I’m sure there are many that try munching of other things that aren’t really edible, just for fun I’m sure.
And this is how I assume they end up on my sheets when out drying in the sun. They happen to land on the large, white fabric, and end up staying too long while they try to figure out if it’s something edible. Taking down the sheets and tossing them in the basket happens too quickly for them to fly away, and they end up trapped in all the folds.
Once on the bed the folds of their hiding places are now open, letting them free to rummage my bed and bedroom.
I guess I should be more careful in examining my sheets and clothes next time I bring them in from the line! Thank god they don’t bite!
